I. Introducing the BRCS01C-05-H1 from Bituo Technik: Your Ultimate Solution for Built-in DC 6mA RCD

Bituo Technik is excited to introduce our latest innovation in electric vehicle (EV) charging safety technology to the international IEC market (countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia requiring IEC 61851-1 standard compliant for EV chargers): the BRCS01C-05-H1 residual current sensor using a DC 5V interface for integration with AC charging controller via wire connection.

This advanced residual current sensor is designed to meet the needs of built-in DC 6mA protection at modern AC EV charging systems, providing reliable and accurate AC/DC residual current detection across the international IEC market. In particular, the product has shown excellent performance against nuisance tripping in the tests from the pilot customers.

II. Key Features of the BRCS01C-05-H1

1. Robust design

Equipped with world-class core components and additional protective components, the BRCS01C-05-H1 guarantees accurate and reliable operation under all conditions, safeguarding your EV charging. For example, the sensor has been used by pilot customers to pass the Radiated RF test of 30V/M after integrating into complete EV chargers.

2. Easy Integration

Engineered for integration flexibility, the BRCS01C-05-H1 use a 5V DC interface with enhanced ESD protection and a connector with a “fixing hook”, facilitating the integration of the sensor into a charging controller via cable connection. Also, its independent fault signal output pins – one for solely DC 6mA trip and the other for Type-A 30mA +DC 6mA trip- provide the flexibility of built-in RDC-PD or RDC-MD design and ease tripping root cause analysis.

3. User-friendly Installation

Designed with ease of use in mind, the BRCS01C-05-H1 offers a straightforward installation process, allowing for quick and hassle-free setup. For example, its large apertures of 17mm facilitate cable through all ranges of AC EV chargers.

4. Reduced nuisance tripping

To reduce nuisance tripping brought by the evolving OBC technologies, the experts at Bituo Technik use an advanced closed-loop fluxgate technology at BRCS01C-05-H1, which optimizes its processing algorithm for composite waveforms of residual current. The overall electronic system was also designed to mitigate the possibility of nuisance tripping, with much positive feedback received from domestic customers before introducing it into the overseas market.

III. Risk of Wire Disconnection

The large-scale applications of BRCS01-ADC-H2 and BRCS01-DC6-H2 that use similar wire connection designs have proved the risk of wire disconnection (the wire between the sensor and charging controller) for wall-mounted Mode-3 EVSE can be well managed with the following measures:

  • Include the self-testing cycle before starting charging every time
  • Use a connector with a “hook” to improve the connection
  • Use two fixing straps to keep the phase and neutral conductors adherent to the residual current sensor
  • Monitor the wire connection status with an additional circuit at the charging controller

IV. Application: Built-in DC 6mA RCD (also named built-in RDC-DD) at Mode-3 EVSE

According to IEC61851-1:2017 and IEC60364-7-222:2018, the appropriate protective measures against electrical shock at Mode-3 EV chargers shall be

  • Option 1: RCD Type B 30mA (IEC 60947-2 type-B mRCD/CBR or IEC 62423 type-B RCCB)
  • Option 2: RCD Type A 30mA (IEC 61008-1 type-A RCCB, IEC 61009-1 type-A RCBO or IEC 60947-2 type-A mRCD/CBR ) and appropriate DC detection above 6mA (IEC62955 RDC-PD / RDC-MD)

The BRCS1C-05-H1 residual current sensor can be used to configure an RDC-PD (Type A 30 mA complying with IEC 61008-1 / IEC60947-2-Annex M and DC 6 mA complying with IEC 62955) or an RDC-MD (solely DC 6 mA complying with IEC 62955) together with the MCU and the relays at a charging controller, so as to meet the protection request defined in IEC 61851-1 and IEC 60364-7-722.
