III. Risk of Wire Disconnection

The large-scale applications of BRCS01-ADC-H2 and BRCS01-DC6-H2 that use similar wire connection designs have proved the risk of wire disconnection (the wire between the sensor and charging controller) for wall-mounted Mode-3 EVSE can be well managed with the following measures:

  • Include the self-testing cycle before starting charging every time
  • Use a connector with a “hook” to improve the connection
  • Use two fixing straps to keep the phase and neutral conductors adherent to the residual current sensor
  • Monitor the wire connection status with an additional circuit at the charging controller

 

IV. Application: Built-in DC 6mA RCD (also named built-in RDC-DD) at Mode-3 EVSE

According to IEC61851-1:2017 and IEC60364-7-222:2018, the appropriate protective measures against electrical shock at Mode-3 EV chargers shall be

  • Option 1: RCD Type B 30mA (IEC 60947-2 type-B mRCD/CBR or IEC 62423 type-B RCCB)
  • Option 2: RCD Type A 30mA (IEC 61008-1 type-A RCCB, IEC 61009-1 type-A RCBO or IEC 60947-2 type-A mRCD/CBR ) and appropriate DC detection above 6mA (IEC62955 RDC-PD / RDC-MD)

The BRCS1C-05-H1 residual current sensor can be used to configure an RDC-PD (Type A 30 mA complying with IEC 61008-1 / IEC60947-2-Annex M and DC 6 mA complying with IEC 62955) or an RDC-MD (solely DC 6 mA complying with IEC 62955) together with the MCU and the relays at a charging controller, so as to meet the protection request defined in IEC 61851-1 and IEC 60364-7-722.
