Electronic Systems for Type B RCBO/RCCB

Electronic Systems at Type B RCBO/RCCB

In general, the electronic system at type B RCBO/RCCB can be categorized by the design of residual current detection systems as follows.

Single detection system (Sole VD system): This system utilizes voltage-dependent (VD) fluxgate technology to effectively detect a wide range of currents, including sinusoidal AC residual current, pulsating DC residual current, composite residual currents with frequencies up to 1000 Hz, and smooth DC residual current.

• Hybrid detection system (Hybrid VI and VD systems): This system combines two subsystems. One sub-system is adept at detecting sinusoidal AC residual current and pulsating DC residual current, independent of line voltage (VI). The other sub-system employs voltage-dependent (VD) fluxgate technology to detect smooth DC residual current.

To detect DC smooth current, “fluxgate” technologies are widely used in the electronic systems of type B RCBO/RCCB. However, the electronic system of type B RCBO/RCCBs is much more than a fluxgate current sensor, in order to provide precise tripping for electrical protection and avoid nuisance tripping that interrupts continuous power supply.

Complete electronic system of VD Type B RCBO/RCCB

The electronic system of voltage-dependent(VD) type B RCBO/RCCB typically consists of
  • Summation current transformer (Fluxgate sensing coil)
  • Fluxgate sensing circuit
  • Electronic amplifier
  • Trip relay
Although the basic operation principle of type B VD RCDs seems similar to type AC/A VD RCDs, the fundamental technologies used to detect various kinds of residual currents are different. The electronic system of AC/A VD RCDs uses the linear input/output of the summation current transformer to measure the residual current, while the electronic system of type B VD RCDs generates a pulse via the excitation coil and then uses the change of the sensing coil saturation’s point symmetry to measure the residual current.

VD sub-system of hybrid Type B RCBO/RCCB

The VD sub-system of hybrid type B RCBO/RCCB consists of
  • Summation current transformer (Fluxgate sensing coil)
  • Fluxgate sensing circuit
The VD sub-system can be supplied by the voltage between any two poles, and it can send fault signal output to a permanent magnet relay. Such an electronic system is mainly used for type B RCBO/RCCB compliant with EN 62423 and does not allow for the VD design to detect sinusoidal AC residual current and pulsating DC residual current.
