What does “Class 1 accuracy” really mean for a power monitoring device?

📊 Key Numbers at a Glance

  • Governing standard: IEC 61557-12

  • PMD classification: PMD-II / DD / Class 1

  • Applies to: SDM01 Gen1 & Gen2, all variants

When customers ask us “how accurate is your meter?”, the honest answer is: it depends on what standard you use to define accuracy — and most people are referencing the wrong one.

This article explains why the SDM01 series is designed and built to meet IEC 61557-12 rather than the more commonly cited IEC 62053-21, what “Class 1” actually means across different operating conditions, and how Bituo Technik guarantees that accuracy through the precision design of its measurement electronics and carefully matched CT system.

Whether you are an installer, a system integrator, or an OEM partner evaluating the SDM01, this guide gives you the technical foundation to understand — and confidently explain — what our accuracy specification really covers.

1. Two Standards, Two Different Jobs

There are two major international standard families for electrical metering accuracy. They are often confused, but they serve fundamentally different purposes:

The SDM01 is not a billing meter. It is a Power Metering and Monitoring Device (PMD) — a device that measures active power, reactive power, apparent power, RMS voltage, RMS current, power factor, frequency, and bi-directional energy simultaneously, in real time.

IEC 61557-12 was specifically created for this class of device. It defines performance classes across all measured parameters, not just kWh accumulation. Critically, IEC 61557-12 explicitly excludes billing meters from its scope — the two standards are designed for different jobs and are not interchangeable.

One-line summary: IEC 62053-21 grades a meter on one thing. IEC 61557-12 grades it on everything. For any application requiring real-time power data, IEC 61557-12 is the correct and more rigorous benchmark.

2. What Is IEC 61557-12?

IEC 61557-12 (“Electrical safety in low voltage distribution systems up to 1000V AC and 1500V DC — Equipment for testing, measuring or monitoring of protective measures — Part 12: Power Metering and Monitoring Devices”) provides a unified, comparable framework for specifying and evaluating PMDs across all their measured parameters.

PMD Functional Classification: Where Does the SDM01 Sit?

IEC 61557-12 classifies PMDs into three functional types based on the depth of measurement they provide:

Type

Purpose

Mandatory Functions

PMD-I

Energy efficiency & cost allocation

Active energy (Ea) only

PMD-II

Basic power monitoring

P, Q, S, Ea, Er, f, I, U/V, PF

PMD-III

Advanced monitoring & network performance

All PMD-II + IN, Eap, THD, harmonics

The SDM01 is a PMD-II device. It covers all nine mandatory PMD-II functions:

  • ✅ Active power (P) and reactive power (Q)

  • ✅ Apparent power (S)

  • ✅ Active energy (Ea) and reactive energy (Er)

  • ✅ Frequency (f)

  • ✅ Phase current (I) and voltage (U/V)

  • ✅ Power factor (PF)

PMD-II is the right classification for residential, light commercial, and building energy management applications — comprehensive enough for real-time monitoring and control, without the overhead of advanced power quality analysis required by PMD-III.

PMD/DD: The Connection Classification

Beyond functional type, IEC 61557-12 also classifies PMDs by how they connect to the circuit. The SDM01 — both Gen1 and Gen2 — is classified as PMD/DD.

The standard states (Section 4.5):

“Each combination of a PMD associated with a dedicated external sensor shall be considered as a PMD/DD that needs to comply with the performance requirements of this document.”

A “dedicated sensor” means a CT that is specifically designed, characterised, and validated to work together with a particular PMD’s measurement electronics — not a generic third-party sensor. Both SDM01 generations use split-core CTs whose electrical characteristics are tightly matched to the main unit’s signal chain, so the entire system — main unit plus CT — is designed, tested, and specified as a single PMD/DD unit.

3. What “Class 1” Actually Means: The Full Uncertainty Table

Key fact: IEC 61557-12 Class 1 does not guarantee ±1% accuracy under all conditions. The standard defines different uncertainty limits across different current ranges and power factor conditions — and this applies to every Class 1 PMD on the market, not just the SDM01.

The table below reproduces the relevant portion of IEC 61557-12:2021, Table 8 — the intrinsic uncertainty limits for active power and active energy, applicable to Class 1 (C = 1) PMD/DD devices:

The ±1.0% zone covers the vast majority of real-world operating conditions. The ±1.5% tolerance only applies at very light loads — below 2A for this model — which represents a small fraction of typical operating time in any residential or commercial installation.

4. Gen1 and Gen2: How We Guarantee Accuracy

Class 1 performance is achieved and maintained through design discipline, production process control, and systematic testing — applied to the complete measurement system of main unit and CT together.

The key principle is simple: accuracy is a system property, not a component property. The CT and the main unit must work together as a matched pair. This is why IEC 61557-12 defines the PMD/DD classification — and why the SDM01’s accuracy specification always refers to a specific unit-plus-CT combination, never to the main unit alone.

SDM01 Gen1 — One Unit, One Matched CT

Each Gen1 main unit ships with a dedicated split-core CT as a factory-matched pair. The two components are produced, validated, and specified together as a single PMD/DD-class measurement system.

  • ✅ Class 1 performance verified for the factory-matched unit + CT combination

  • ✅ Available in 120A and 200A CT variants — each is a separately validated system

  • ❌ Replacing the Gen1 CT with any other CT invalidates the factory calibration and the Class 1 specification

SDM01 Gen2 — Flexible, But Controlled

The SDM01 Gen2 introduces a more flexible architecture. The Gen2 main unit has been designed and validated against multiple Bituo-approved CT models, giving installers the freedom to select the right CT for their application without compromising accuracy.

  • ✅ Class 1 performance verified for any combination on the Bituo approved CT list (e.g., BSCT-16B 120A/40mA)

  • ✅ Installers can select the appropriate CT aperture or current rating while maintaining full Class 1 performance

  • ❌ Third-party CTs not on the approved list are not supported for Class 1 operation

Why does CT matching matter? A CT is not a passive cable — it is a precision component whose characteristics directly affect measurement accuracy. Only CTs that have been validated as part of the SDM01 system can guarantee Class 1 performance. Using an unapproved CT introduces errors outside the scope of our design and validation.

5. Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is a Class 1 energy meter always accurate to within ±1%?

No. IEC 61557-12 Class 1 guarantees ±1.0% accuracy above 10%·Ib at unity power factor. Below that threshold — 1A to 2A for the SDM01-TWM-12 — the standard permits ±1.5%. This is consistent across all IEC 61557-12 Class 1 devices and reflects the physical difficulty of measuring very small currents with high precision. For the vast majority of real-world loads, the ±1.0% zone applies.

Q: Why does the SDM01 follow IEC 61557-12 instead of IEC 62053-21?

Because IEC 62053-21 only covers kWh billing accuracy — it says nothing about instantaneous power, voltage, current, or power factor. The SDM01 is a multi-function PMD, not a billing meter. IEC 61557-12 covers all measured parameters under one framework, making it the correct and more complete standard for real-time power monitoring applications.

Q: Does the SDM01 hold a third-party IEC 61557-12 certification?

No — and this is a deliberate choice. The SDM01 is designed, produced, and tested to meet IEC 61557-12 Class 1 requirements through rigorous internal processes. We use IEC 61557-12 as our design and performance target, and our validation covers the complete unit-plus-CT system across the full operating range.

Q: Can I use any split-core CT with the SDM01?

No — accuracy is a system property, not just a meter property.

  • Gen1: Must use the factory-matched CT. Any substitution invalidates the Class 1 specification.

  • Gen2: Can be paired with any CT on the Bituo approved CT list. Each approved combination has been validated as a complete system. Third-party CTs are not supported for Class 1 operation.

Q: What is the minimum current the SDM01 can measure accurately?

There are two thresholds to understand:

  • Starting current: The minimum current at which the meter begins registering energy — the SDM01 responds well below the accuracy-guaranteed range.

  • Accuracy-guaranteed minimum: Per IEC 61557-12 Table 8, Class 1 accuracy begins at 5%·Ib (1A for the SDM01-TWM-12) with ±1.5%, and full ±1.0% accuracy applies from 10%·Ib (2A) onwards.

Q: What does PMD-II mean, and why does it matter?

PMD-II is the IEC 61557-12 functional classification for basic power monitoring devices. It mandates nine measurement functions: P, Q, S, Ea, Er, f, I, U/V, and PF. The SDM01 covers all of them. PMD-II is the appropriate classification for residential, commercial, and building energy management — more capable than PMD-I (energy-only), without the advanced power quality requirements of PMD-III.
