Upgrade Your EV Charging System Confirming To IEC61851-1:2017 With DC6 Series Of RDC-MD

Liu Hualei | Bituo Technik

According to IEC 61851-1:2017 (Electric vehicle conductive charging system – Part 1: General requirements, Section 8.5), residual current protection for Mode-3 charging must utilize one of the following measures:

  • Option 1: RCD Type B

  • Option 2: RCD Type A combined with appropriate equipment that ensures disconnection of the supply in the event of a DC fault current exceeding 6mA.

Advantages of the Type-A RCD + RDC-DD Approach

When the DC protection equipment is designed correctly, Option 2 offers significant advantages over using a standalone Type-B RCD:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: It is generally a more economical solution for EV charger manufacturers.

  • Enhanced Safety: Explicitly detecting insulation faults in the Power Factor Corrector (PFC) ensures superior protection for EV users.

  • Smart Integration: Adding smart communication features reduces operational costs.

  • High Reliability: Proven stability even in challenging environmental conditions.

The Role of IEC 62955:2018 in EV Safety

Before 2018, a specific product standard for residual direct current protection devices was lacking. The publication of IEC 62955:2018 (Residual direct current detecting device (RDC-DD) to be used for Mode 3 charging of electric vehicles) resolved this.

This standard acts as a finely calibrated benchmark for designing and testing DC fault current protection devices (>6mA), fundamentally raising the safety bar for EV charging infrastructure.

Bituo's TÜV-Certified RDC-MD Solution

Bituo provides an optimal, compliant solution for Option 2:

  • Customers select a standard Type-A RCBO/RCCB from reputable brands (e.g., ABB, Siemens).

  • Customers integrate Bituo's RDC-MD Detection Module (iRCS or BRCS-01), or the complete RDC-MD set (Detection Module + Monitoring Module). This setup guarantees supply disconnection if a DC fault current exceeds 6mA.
